Poetry Excerpt - How Handsome You've Grown by Freya Larsen

The story behind this poem is of a woman whose love was outgrown. The boy she once knew as a young girl has lived apart from her for some time, growing and becoming an image of a weathered man.

Though time has passed for him, it hasn't for her, as she's been scarred by the loss of him all those years ago. Now, she barely recognizes his shape and wonders if he'd even recognize her old face.

It's a short piece I wrote inspired by a scene in a novel I was working on.

Sometimes, writing poetry helps pry open the floodwaters needed to create emotion. This poem is called How Handsome You've Grown.

How handsome you've grown
Tall, with flesh of ivory rosed
With strength harbored in your hands
And resilience that's made you a man

I think of you often, small and meek
Never having taken the time to think
One day you'd be weathered
One day you'd be strong
One day you'd be overgrown with worry so long

Do you miss me?
Do you care?
Do you see me?
Are you there?

My, how handsome you've grown
I miss your flecks of blond auburn hair
Your tender face and golden way
That simple time, our precious life

I've never known you, how you are now
So rough and impenetrable
The boy I knew, the man you are
Would he recognize the girl in me?
Who I used to be?

Because while you've grown and scurried free
I've been here,
Stationary.
