The story behind this poem is of a woman whose love was outgrown. The boy she once knew as a young girl has lived apart from her for some time, growing and becoming an image of a weathered man.
Though time has passed for him, it hasn't for her, as she's been scarred by the loss of him all those years ago. Now, she barely recognizes his shape and wonders if he'd even recognize her old face.
It's a short piece I wrote inspired by a scene in a novel I was working on.
Sometimes, writing poetry helps pry open the floodwaters needed to create emotion. This poem is called How Handsome You've Grown.
How handsome you've grownTall, with flesh of ivory rosedWith strength harbored in your handsAnd resilience that's made you a manI think of you often, small and meekNever having taken the time to thinkOne day you'd be weatheredOne day you'd be strongOne day you'd be overgrown with worry so longDo you miss me?Do you care?Do you see me?Are you there? My, how handsome you've grownI miss your flecks of blond auburn hairYour tender face and golden wayThat simple time, our precious lifeI've never known you, how you are nowSo rough and impenetrableThe boy I knew, the man you areWould he recognize the girl in me?Who I used to be?Because while you've grown and scurried freeI've been here,Stationary.
