1. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

F. Scott Fitzgerald created a character that encompasses everything we want to be, inclusive of the demons we carry with us that are often the driving force behind the determined actions we take to achieve what we want, leave behind what we don't, and the delusions we create to make ourselves believe its all okay.

The Great Gatsby presents a tragic love story set against the backdrop of the Roaring Twenties. Jay Gatsby, a wealthy and enigmatic figure, becomes infatuated with Daisy Buchanan, a woman from his past who is now married to another man. Gatsby's love for Daisy is all-consuming, driving him to great lengths to win her back and recreate the past.

Fitzgerald's novel explores the themes of unattainable dreams, social stratification, and the corruption of the American Dream. Through Gatsby and Daisy's ill-fated love, the novel offers a piercing critique of the emptiness and tragedy that can arise from the pursuit of love and wealth.

J. Gatsby is a man who owns it all and shares it all because there's only one thing in this world that's worth more than everything he has combined, a woman. Whether looking at the story from the point of view of Gatsby or the narrator, Carraway, there's something to learn, something to relate to, and everything to imagine.

The Great Gatsby Film (2012)

The Great Gatsby has been adapted for cinema several times. But my favorite version is the 2012 film starring Leonardo DiCaprio as J. Gatsby, Toby Maguire as Carraway, and Carey Mulligan as Daisy. The film features an almost fantasy-like portrayal in how scenes are constructed, and, in my humble opinion, is the film Leo should have won an Oscar for.

This film features a stellar soundtrack produced by Baz Luhrmann and released by Interscope Records in 2012. Jay Z served as executive producer, and the album contains superbly haunting covers of various songs and new material by various artists. It was an all-around homage to the original story by Fitzgerald.

2. Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights

How far would you go to be with the person you love? Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights unfolds against the atmospheric backdrop of the Yorkshire moors. The novel explores the tormented love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, childhood friends whose connection intensifies into a passionate but tumultuous affair. Bound by their deep bond, Catherine's decision to marry another man sets off a series of vengeful actions and haunting repercussions.

Brontë's exploration of love, obsession, and revenge paints a hauntingly tragic portrait of two souls destined to be together but forever separated by circumstances, revealing the destructive power of unrequited love and the enduring pain it inflicts.

The book also brings to life the villainous temperament that can be birthed when love is stripped from our hands. Wuthering Heights details the lengths a tortured orphan would go to in order to keep that love alive.

Heathcliff and Catherine's love story is poisonous, unforgettable, and pure all at the same time. The eerie setting makes the book an intimate experience between the characters and the reader. I've long held it in my heart as a testament to the gutwrenching range love can have.

Wuthering Heights Film (1992)

Wuthering Heights has been adapted for cinema on several occasions. However, my favorite version remains the 1992 film starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche. Directed by Peter Kosminsky, the film portrays a dark tale of love and despair that is impossible to watch without experiencing its entrenching emotions.

3. Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

I personally own this book in every format possible, Kindle, Audiobook, leatherbound hardcover, and paperback. I think that Anna Karenina's story relates to the grown spirit of women after we learn the realities of life, love, and marriage. Lack of interest, excitement, wanting, or attention leads to the search for external stimuli, that once attained cannot be held. It is a story of life's truth; sometimes, there is no happy ending for anyone involved in a triangle of love.

Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina presents a complex portrayal of tragic love in 19th-century Russia. The novel follows Anna Karenina, a married woman who embarks on a passionate affair with Count Vronsky, challenging the conventions of society. As their love unfolds, they face societal condemnation, moral dilemmas, and internal conflicts.

Tolstoy masterfully explores the consequences of pursuing forbidden desires and the profound impact it has on the lives of those involved. Anna Karenina is a compelling examination of the human heart and the devastating choices one can make in the pursuit of love.

I particularly enjoy Tolstoy's use of dialogue in his writings. Conversations are long but built upon short answers, statements, and questions, quite similar to how we'd naturally partake with someone who knows us well.

You see, you get to know these characters so deeply, that you already know what they mean to say when they speak. After a few pages of just one dialogue, you're so enthralled, as if you're at the table, that you don't even notice it's gone on for six pages. It's one of those books really written for the reader.

Anna Karenina Film (2012) and Series (2017)

Anna Karenina has been made into feature films several times as well, most notably in 2012 when it was directed as a play-like film starring Jude Law and Keira Knightly. Personally, I found the 2017 Russian adaptation to be closest to the book and deeper in its emotive sense.

4. Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez

Gabriel García Márquez's Love in the Time of Cholera is a mesmerizing novel that spans several decades, exploring the enduring love between Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza. Set in a Caribbean coastal town and parts of Colombia, the story unfolds against a backdrop of cholera epidemics and societal upheaval. When Fermina marries a prominent doctor, Florentino continues to nurture his love for her in secret, waiting for the opportunity to win her heart.

This book is truly a heartwrenching story of watching from a distance as that which you hold dear is tended by another, often with less tenderness than you would provide. It asks the question, "How long would you wait for love when everything stands between you?"

Florentino's absolute loyalty to the idea of a life with Fermina nearly made my heart fall right out of my chest.

Márquez's evocative prose and magical realism blend to create a narrative that delves into themes of love, time, and the complexities of human relationships. Love in the Time of Cholera is a powerful meditation on the transformative power of love, its endurance over time, and the sacrifices one is willing to make for it.

5. Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre

There isn't much I can say about Jane Eyre without offering spoilers, but it's a classic portrayal of the inferiority a woman can feel in the presence of a man who has it all and shows interest at one point and indifference at the next.

Jane arrives at Thornfield to play the role of governess to Mr. Rochester's ward, he being the mysterious master of the home. The novel spans the lifetime of Jane, from her younger years as an orphan to her experiences and love affections at Thornfield.

In Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, the eponymous protagonist navigates a tumultuous journey of love and self-discovery. Jane falls deeply in love with the brooding Mr. Rochester, despite the obstacles and secrets that threaten to tear them apart.

Their love story unfolds against a backdrop of societal constraints, moral dilemmas, and haunting secrets. Brontë skillfully weaves a tale of passionate love, sacrifice, and the pursuit of personal integrity. Jane Eyre is a classic portrayal of a love that endures trials and tribulations, leaving readers captivated by its depth and the emotional journey of its characters.

It is equally heartbreaking and fulfilling, arguably being the only one of the three major Brontë novels with some semblance of a happy ending.

Jane Eyre Films (1996, 2011) and Miniseries (2007)

Jane Eyre is one of those stories that I aim to watch whenever it's adapted for film. I haven't found a version I've not enjoyed. The 2007 BBC television miniseries was my favorite. It is closely followed by the 1996 film starring Charlotte Gainsbourg and William Hurt. I also enjoyed the 2011 film starring Michael Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska.

6. Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare

"You cannot keep apart what yearns to be close. You cannot decide where love's arrow will fall."

Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet stands as the quintessential tale of tragic love. Set in Verona, the play follows the young lovers Romeo and Juliet, who find themselves caught in a bitter feud between their families.

Their love, passionate and all-consuming, defies the enmity surrounding them. However, their relationship becomes a catalyst for a chain of unfortunate events, leading to heart-wrenching consequences.

This timeless tragedy explores themes of impulsive youth, the power of love, and the destructive forces of societal division, leaving readers gripped by the intensity of their ill-fated romance. Throughout generations, it has served as a warning and a true reflection of love's boundary-crossing reach. It says to each reader, "You cannot keep apart what yearns to be close. You cannot decide where love's arrow will fall."
