Excerpt of The Taste of Summer by Freya Larsen |
In a recent post, I mentioned sharing some poetry as part of my new blog schedule. The story behind this poem is of love broken apart by what seems like the changes in seasons, which is also a metaphor for the changes we go through in relationships. This love story began in the bright light of summer. But as the weather dimmed and the light dampened, so did their love.
It's a short piece I wrote inspired by a scene in a novel I was working on.
Sometimes, writing poetry helps pry open the floodwaters needed to create emotion. This poem is called The Taste of Summer, and it's closely related to The Taste of You is Haunting Me.
The Taste of Summer
I taste the summer air
Like sweetness and flowers
The smell of heat and wash of showers
I feel the breeze, which comes amassed
Heavily carried on Summer's back
I taste the summer air, now that you're not there
The smell of your love's perfume affixed
I feel you in every step I take
Through every corner and every day
The tug of your shoulder against my elbow
The pause in your step when near what's worth stopping for
The bookshop on 3rd
The flowers on Broadway
The records in Crosby's
And the lenses in Lofty's
I taste you in the summer air
I breathe your scent and make of you my light
I hammer down those streets, away from you and me
I cobble down that path with sense better in me
I cannot enjoy those roads, those ways
Those still being my best memories
But when summer retreats and life returns to slumber
What is left there of you and me?
For winter came,
And it took your thunder.
